Wild West Camp, Round 2

Yee Haw, Cameron had a BLAST at his second cub scout camp of the summer - Gilbert Ranch near Mt. Angel, OR. This is a real working ranch, so animals were part of the deal. This camp was for Webelos only (older cub scouts), so they got to do some things that aren't done at all camps. It was three nights and three days of roping, horseback riding, leatherwork, archery, bb guns, panning for gold, and western street shows. Look below for pictures of the fun!

The Nichols "Ranch" for the weekend (note that this brings back memories for Mom - shades of Philmont Scout Ranch!). Since they were there at the hottest week of the summer (so far) in the Willamette Valley (days were well over 100 degrees, with high humidity), Will and Cameron were thankful that all of the walls on their tent rolled up for maximum ventilation. Now if there had just been even a tiny breeze...

Cameron waking up after a hot night. According to Will, they showered each night, climbed the hill to their camp, laid down, and sweated all night!

The adults - all of whom had as much fun as the kids!

Since our group came from so far away, and camp ended at 7 pm, our group was allowed to stay an extra night and head home the next morning. The kids were treated to ice cream (thank you Mr. Gordon!) and a campfire on their final night.

Each group of boys were given a brand to identify them for the weekend (don't worry, they didn't get their brand in the traditional way!). Our group was the "2 of Hearts" brand.

Cameron leading his horse, Kid. This camp was an introduction to horsemanship, so the scouts went for a short trail ride. They also learned grooming skills and horse care.

Woo hoo, Cameron loved the ride! He was proud that he was able to use the reins properly to guide his horse. He decided le loved horseback riding as much as playing the guitar!

"Main Street" included the dining hall (inside the Hotel facade), and the trading post (inside the Mercantile facade). The whole thing made for a fun theme, that looked pretty authentic!

Our favorite wrangler, Cameron, who loved roping the steer. He has practiced his roping skills at Uncle Bob's farm before, so he spent hours getting better and better at it.

Panning for gold! The camp seeds the creek with iron pyrate (fools gold), and the kids have a blast finding it. Just one of the many activities that kept the boys busy all day.
